The Zilker Botanical Garden

Zilker Botanical Garden is a popular destination for locals of the Austin Metropolitan Area and tourists alike. Located in the heart of Austin, TX, this botanical garden features over 150 acres of landscaped gardens, ponds, streams, and waterfalls. The garden was donated to the City of Austin by George W. Zilker in 1926. It has since been developed into a beautiful place where you can escape from the hustle and bustle of city life while exploring nature's beauty.

Zilker Botanical Garden is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Admission and parking are both free, but donations for grounds upkeep and maintenance are always welcome. The garden features three different types of gardens: the Zilker Gardens, Rock Island Trail & Waterfall Overlook Trail, which visitors can hike around on their own; the Japanese Garden, which is a self-guided tour; and the South Texas Plains Garden, which has its docent on staff to answer questions.

There are also special events hosted at Zilker Botanical Garden including an Easter celebration in late March with live music, food vendors, and activities for kids. The garden hosts several workshops throughout the year ranging from photography and painting to yoga, meditation, and fitness classes.

When is the best time to visit the Zilker Botanical Garden?

When the Zilker Botanical Garden is in full bloom, it’s a truly magical experience. The garden is typically open year-round but to get the best view of all its beauty you should visit at least once between late January and early March when all its flowers are in bloom. This time frame also provides great weather for exploring the garden.

It’s popular in the spring, so if you visit then it will be crowded with people enjoying all of the flowers and blooming trees. Also, keep in mind that there is no shade cover which means you might want to plan for a cool day or time of year when visiting; but with the blooms and the flowers, it won’t be difficult to find shade either way.
